A birthday treat

The day started with a visit to one of our favourite small towns, Morella, where we had a light lunch. Morella is across the province border in Valencia.

From there we headed west and back over the border into Teruel to Cantavieja which is around 1,310 metres above sea level...

...passing very large flocks of sheep and herds of goats on the way. They don't seem to mind the colder weather at this altitude.

We arrived at Hotel Balfagon and checked in to our room,...

...had our relaxing spa, steam sauna followed by a back and leg massage...

...and then a bottle of Cava and some chocolates in our room.

Then it was time for evening meal and we were booked in for the Menú Especial Degustación Temporada or the Special Seasonal Tasting Menu.

It started with Jamón y Queso con miel y aroma de tomillo, ham and local cheese with honey and thyme.

This was followed by Arroz melosa de borrajas y delicias de cordero which translates as sweet rice with borage and delights of lamb.

Our 3rd starter was Crema de boletus con aceite de trufa melanosporum which was Cream of porcini with truffle oil.

For the main course or segundo we had a choice. I chose the Lomo de ternera del Maestrazgo al foie con cebollitas y menta, the local steak with small onions...

...and Margaret had Medallones de ternasco de Aragón en su jugo con melocotón de Calanda caramelizado, lamb cutlets of the region with local peaches.

For postre, we had Degustación de Postres de la Casa, a selection of the chefs puddings.

All of this was followed by tea and coffee...

...and a visit to the bodega, the wine cellar - very impressive.

After breakfast the following morning we made our way back from the hotel...

...and passed this interesting rock formation.
I shall post more information about it when I get it.

What a way to spend a birthday!
