Marbella

To a lot of people Marbella means the beach.

However, we discovered another side to the town.

Only a few minutes from the beach and the hordes of tourists lies the old quarter...

...with very traditional small streets...

...with small shops and quiet tapas bars.

There are even pomegranate trees!

The most recent buildings merge with...

...the original city walls.

There are various Christian churches and ermitas dotted around...

...and the religious tradition is everywhere...

...as are the decorative pavements.

Ancient and modern live side by side...

...and there are just so many delightful small streets.

The inside of the Cathedral is magnificent...

...as are the sights which greet you as you wander around.

This is the "Plaza de Naranjos" or "Orange Square" named not because the parasols are orange but because it is surrounded by orange trees.

Even here there are more interesting small courtyards.

There's nothing like a good fountain to maintain a cool and fresh atmosphere...

...and here there are several!

Also essential are shaded seating areas although a beautiful mosaic bench does not win awards for comfort.

On the way down to the beach there are many sculptures...

...all different and interesting...

...and yes, that is an elephant on the sand! Only a model though.
