The 14th walk along the country tracks

It was the XIV Marcha por Caminos de Torre del Compte this morning.

It was around 15 km and over 200 people attended and enjoyed the walk on a most pleasant day.

Although we had decided to give the walk itself a miss this year there was no question of missing out on the meal!

This year it was a delicious fideuá.

This event marks the 7th birthday of this blog. This is the 350th post and to date there have been 73,633 views. We could not have imagined that 7 years ago!

Calaceite fair

Calaceite is a lovely village only 20 km to the north east of Torre del Compte. This weekend is the XXVII Feria del Olivo y del Aceite, the 27th Olive tree and Oil fair.

However, it was fairly quiet - more people will attend tomorrow we were told.

The traders weren't doing much business this afternoon...

...despite everything being prepared and looking lovely.

The buildings do look rather grand...

but it was very quiet...

...with only a Police car parked on the street which had been designated a no parking area for the day.

As is usual with these villages there were some interesting doors...

...with the one above having the date 1738 carved above the keystone.

Also of interest were the public drinking water fountain...

...and the statue of the mill stones.

There was also poultry for sale.

On the way back the fields of vines look very fresh with plenty of growth on them.

And to finish off, here's a shot to show how our almonds are coming along...

...and how our olive trees are about to blossom with very small white flowers that produce those wonderful olives!

Easter Monday BBQ

The morning starts with us going to Alcañiz for breakfast in La Oficina, a small restaurant. I love the name, you can just imagine someone's wife phoning and saying, "where are you?" to which the guy can truthfully reply, "I'm in the office."

OK, breakfast can consist of bacon, egg and chips...

...but if you are on a diet, maybe just a bocadillo.

After all, we only come here once a year!

After the shopping it's on with the BBQ and the aubergines and peppers are roasted first,...

...the strawberries hulled and quartered...

...and the cheese, jamón and olives put onto plates.

Outside, the weather isn't too good, after all, it is Easter Monday and it's traditional for it to be cold and wet...

...but inside we have the fire roaring away...

...as the food is prepared.

This year there are only 3 couples for the meal...

...but that certainly doesn't stop it being really enjoyable.

Next up, the artichokes are roasted, they have hearts too,...

...and then the meat is cooked,...

...loads of lamb chops...

...and some morcilla.

When we bought the meat this morning at the local butchers we asked for lamb chops and the butcher brought out half a lamb and cut it up for us - none of this hanging around pre-cut in boxes in a cool display with a best-by date on it!

The weather is looking brighter...

...as we work our way through the meal.

Everything in the countryside looks fresher after the rain...

...and we finally get to the strawberries and cream.

What a wonderful way to spend an Easter Monday!

The Easter Market

It's Easter Saturday morning and time for the Market of the Amas de Casa of Torre del Compte.

As usual there is the plant stall,...

...the ladies making crespells...

...and a stall selling a variety of homemade cakes.

There was a very good turnout to support their efforts...

...the star of which must be the book of recipes, 'Between stoves and aprons', containing 89 recipes from the residents of the village. It is very professionally produced and a bargain at only €10. The ISBN is 9788461690923.
