Santa Águeda
This year it was the turn of our peña to organise the celebration of Santa Águeda.
The morning started with breakfast in the bar which means the ladies have a hearty bocadillo de jamón y tomate.
And here's Santa Águeda herself in the photo below, not in the church for the mass this year as the church is still undergoing renovation, but in the school room, where the service is held in the afternoon.
The ladies of the peña wear their traditional dress...
...and at the end of the service Santa Agueda is taken to her shrine then...
...around the village and back to the school room...
...where specially blessed pieces of sponge cake are given out as people leave.
To see my video of the mass, click HERE.
Also having being blessed during the service are the cakes which are then taken to the salón next to the bar...
...where they are consumed with cava and dancing ensues.
To see my video of the ladies dancing, click HERE, and to see everyone dancing the Conga, click HERE.
A highlight at this point in the proceedings is the singing of the Jota de la Torre where the peña join the musicians on stage.
To see my video of this event, click HERE.
As part of the entertainment, the peña performed 3 dance routines which were very well received.
To see the 'Mamma Maria' dance, click HERE.
To see the 'Jo 'n' Jo Tango' routine, click HERE.
To see the performance of the 'Cowboy Charleston', click HERE.
In addition there were two performances of sketches which were hilarious. Their explanations are next to the videos.
You can see the first by clicking HERE, and the second one as shown in the photo above, by clicking HERE.
And so, at the end of an exhausting day, especially for the ladies of the peña, it was time for a meal...
...and finally a chance to relax!

The Easter Market
It's Easter Saturday morning and time for the Market of the Amas de Casa of Torre del Compte.
...the star of which must be the book of recipes, 'Between stoves and aprons', containing 89 recipes from the residents of the village. It is very professionally produced and a bargain at only €10. The ISBN is 9788461690923.
As usual there is the plant stall,...
...the ladies making crespells...
...and a stall selling a variety of homemade cakes.
There was a very good turnout to support their efforts...

The meal of the Amas de Casa
It's that time of the year again for the meal of the Amas de Casa, the houswives, of Torre del Compte...
...and once again it was held in the polideportivo, the village Sports Hall, which is still unfinished, exactly the same as it was last year, but despite that, it is being used. In the photo above we have the 3M's, Maria, Margaret and Maribel who are certainly enjoying the occasion.
Every lady received a present which was a chiffon scarf although how they were able to colour co-ordinate them as the boxes were placed on the tables before people took their places is beyond me!
The first course was entremeses, or hors d'oeuvres as it is known in English using the French term.

The Easter market of the Amas de Casa
It's that time of year already for the Amas de Casa, (the housewives group), in Torre del Compte to hold their annual market.
We have been having some heavy showers for the last couple of days but fortunately this morning produced only a couple of very light showers and the market went ahead in the village street as in previous years.
As usual it proved very popular and there was brisk trade for the doughnuts and other cakes as well as on the plant stall.

Valjunquera - the 5th world fair!
The 5th World Fair...

...at least that's what the tee-shirts say! |
Yet another outing for Margaret's embroideries...
...but there's a lot to contend with...
...from all over the world.
Even the music had a South American flavour!
But the Amas de Casa of Torre del Compte were there!

Easter Saturday market
It's not battered fish being fried, it's Crespells - or at least that's what they call them here, (although they have nothing to do with the traditional Crespell of Mallorca apart from the fact that they are eaten at Easter.)

What these Crespells consist of are (hairy) leaves from a green plant which grows locally down by the river, (a plant called Borraja, or Borage which is very good for your health), battered and deep fried in olive oil then eaten covered in honey. They are delicious.

More pasteles made by the ladies were Rollets and Casquetas which sold like hot cakes as the saying goes, despite being cold!

Other items on offer from the Amas de Casa in their market this morning were plants...

There was a very good turnout and the funds of the Amas de Casa were boosted for another year.

Calanda
Saturday morning and I am the designated driver for 4 members of the Amas de Casa of Torre del Compte to visit an exhibition of patchwork and lacemaking presented by the Amas de Casa group in the (relatively) nearby village of Calanda.

The exhibition is taking place in the very large Multiusos hall and has specialist stalls selling everything you would need to produce lace - except the know how!

People are there from not just the local villages but from far and wide across the region.

Rosario, Rosi, (wearing her Amas de Casa t-shirt), Carmen and Margaret, pose for a photograph in front of a patchwork bedspread.

Young and old settle down to practise their skills at bobbin lacemaking...
...while some designs just look so incredibly complicated!
It's good to see that these activities are still thriving.
