Pollença and Formentor

A Sunday morning drive from the south west to the north east of the island and the town of Pollença as we had been told the market was on.

Not only was the market in progress but so was an open air church service. There was also a feria/fiesta taking place.

This is the window in the 13th century Eglésia de Nostra Senyora dels Ángels the building which tends to dominate the Plaça Mayor.

Once again there were plenty of plants for sale on the market - not a usual sight on mainland Spain.

There was plenty of local produce to be had...

...as well as local craftwork.

There was even a stall selling all the bits you would need to make your own jewellery...

...as well as shops selling gifts for the hordes of tourists.

One of the main attractions of this town is the Steps of Calvary, 365 in all, called the Calle de Calvari leading to the Calvary Chapel at the top.

Every year on Good Friday the crucifixion of Christ is re-enacted at the top of the hill.

After the crucifixion...

...the body is removed from the cross...

...and ceremoniously carried around the town...

... in silence save for the slow beating of a drum.

After we had been to the top we came back down and had lunch at one of the many restaurants around the bottom of the steps.

The church can be seen from virtually anywhere in this town.

To complete our meal we had an ensaïmada, a pastry type of bread typical of Mallorca.

After lunch a drive to Cap de Formentor although we didn't get right to the end to see the lighthouse.

Instead, we went upwards to the watchtower on the top.

From here there are fantastic panoramic views down the 300 metre cliffs to the sea and into the far distance.

Apart from the tourists, the only other creatures up here...

...are the mountain goats.

Some (younger) tourists actually scaled the iron ladder to venture inside the tower.

We settled on enjoying the view from the outside.

Near our hotel there was another watchtower - however, we couldn't get close to this one as it was in the grounds of the hotel next door.

Another fantastic day out!
