Peñarroya de Tastavins

At 8.30 a.m. the 9 ladies from Torre del Compte joined the coach to take them to Peñarroya de Tastavins, 34 km away to the south-west, a beautiful village which nestles in the foothills of Els Ports

It is only around 22 km from Rossell which is on the other side of the mountain range as the crow flies or 69 km if you have to go by road!

Once there, breakfast was provided in the grounds of the Santuario de la Virgen de la Fuente...

...the original part was constructed in the 14th century being extended to include the cloisters in the 16th century.

It is a fine example of Gothic architecture...

...with exquisite ceilings.

In 1931 the ermita was declared a national monument and in 2001 a World Heritage site for Mudejar art in Aragón.

Above is the road bridge from Valderrobres to Monroyo which crosses the río Tastavins.

"Lo Masmut" is an ethnological museum showing a wide range of traditional crafts and the way life used to be.

At least 400 ladies from the Matarraña region attended on the day and were given a guided tour around the village...

...which included visiting the 18th century la iglesia parroquial Santa María la Mayor...

...as well as enjoying the wonderful views from different points around the village.

In the 16th century La Lonja was built and was originally used as a market place, a meeting place and a place to slaughter animals...

...until the mid 1960's when the washing area, los lavaderos, took over where the ladies of the village could wash the clothes of their family.

Above is the home of the famous Catalan author Desideri Lombarte i Arrufat, born there in 1937 and who died in 1989 in Barcelona.

The tour was followed by a meal...

...and then by entertainment in the form of jotas performed by a group from the village and a "fashion show".

A great day out!
